Calm, inclusive and can do, Peter Sharpe retooled this major hospital project with modern methods of construction. His off-site fabrication of structure, facade, services and toilet pods shrank the construction period by 42 weeks, and ensured certainty of programme, cost and quality. And he relieved the client of the additional cost and speed of delivery challenges involved in building a Nightingale-type field hospital by fast-tracking completion of the ward beds. He completed five weeks early, defect-free and below budget.

The gestation period for this major hospital scheme was so lengthy that it gave Peter Sharpe the opportunity to flip the design from traditional methods of construction to modern when he came on board the re-energised project.

His introduction of off-site fabrication for structure, facade, services and toilet pods demonstrated the huge value of modern techniques. It cut the construction period by 42 weeks and ensured certainty of programme, cost and quality. It also downsized the on-site workforce (and therefore the safety risk) to remove 250,000 hours of labour from the site programme.

His use of digital design allowed the precast facade panel geometry to be transferred seamlessly to the manufacturing team from architectural design models. Associated gains included the deployment of only three different precast panel types, with interesting and lively facades created by using different aluminium window configurations set within the standardised openings.

The logistics strategy was impeccable. In an early enabling works win, Peter persuaded the client to buy an adjoining field for an on-site cut and fill. It reduced construction traffic and the need to move 100,000 cubic metres of soil off site.

To avoid the prefabricated service modules and toilet pods being tarnished by poor weather, he installed them as late as possible in the build sequence. The full-height curtain walling sections at the end of each ward template were made wide enough for the units to be skated through and onto the floor slabs as a just-in-time activity.

And he relieved the client of the additional cost and speed of delivery challenges involved in building a Nightingale-type field hospital by fast-tracking completion of the ward beds. He released 364 beds in April and the rest in May, completing the rest of the contract five weeks early, defect-free and below budget.
