Mark Prince

Eric Wright Construction

Passionate about construction, and a team player through and through, Mark Prince’s journey from labourer to site manager has now got as far as leading the construction of a 23,000sqft teaching block. His early construction of the tarmac playground, which would ultimately be left landlocked by the build, eliminated access difficulties later in the programme. He won the respect of the client for doing what he said he would, and the confidence of the user.

About the Project

Queen Elizabeth Studio School, Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria

Client: Department for Education

Contract: D&B

Value: £4.5m

Passionate about construction, and a team player through and through, Mark Prince has put in a lot of hard work to make the journey from labourer to site manager. He took charge of this project to build a 23,000sqft studio – including a drama/lecture theatre, IT hubs, engineering suite, art rooms and digital media studios – on the site of the school’s former tennis courts.

With logistics and accessibility particular concerns given the close proximity of the rest of the school and surrounding residential properties, Mark made the decision to bring forward the construction of the tarmac playground, which would ultimately be left landlocked by the new build. His initiative allowed the area to be completed and then mothballed, eliminating access difficulties later in the programme. He also laid a separate road to the works from the main highway to isolate site traffic from general school access and to avoid disrupting school activities.

He won the respect of the client for doing what he said he would, and the confidence of the school by delivering on its wishes. He engaged with pupils, allowed different classes onto site to explain the different roles in construction, and donated money to buy new kits for the school rugby and netball teams.
