Silver Medal Winner
Category: Projects £10-15m
Name: Richard Tyler ACIOB
Company: HBG Construction
Project: Freebrough College, Teesside
Contract: JCT 1998 with contractor's design

A skilled and knowledgeable construction manager, Richard Tyler's input into design innovation and risk management was a key factor in HBG winning this contract.

With the contract won, Richard led the regular design team meetings which carried out the all-important value engineering, saving the client £250,000 on its very tight budget.

Just as important was his decision to delay the site start by 10 weeks. Richard wanted to give the design team time to produce sufficient information prior to its novation to HBG so there would be no subsequent delays onsite. The extra time would also give the client team enough breathing space to be happy with the final layouts and base design, minimising change requests and ensuring satisfaction with the final building.

Richard helped build a great team spirit between all parties. He was the hub of the team and promoted communication, information flow and relationships. He pulled the whole team together and promoted an open-door policy.

He set up meetings between the designers and the end-users to agree the final room datasheets and to integrate services with furniture positions. And he took the teachers around the site to get their feedback and to familiarise them with the building.

He also instigated meetings with the key subcontractors to discuss programme and sequencing to ensure they integrated the activities of other trades into their own works programmes. This went a long way to helping individual subcontractors understand the importance of achieving the milestones to prevent delay to following trades. He held regular progress meetings, and replanned works to overcome the inevitable issues that arose.

Richard's optimism, drive and commitment drove the team, kept spirits high and fuelled a can-do attitude within the project. His hands-on approach was a shining example of active motivation and delivered a prestigious project in a thoroughly professional manner.
