Category: Residential Units 4 Storey and Over Name: Steve Vorres Company: Taylor Woodrow Construction Project: Victoria Wharf, Cardiff, phases 1 and 2 Contract: JCT 1998 D&B |
The best has never been quite good enough for Steve Vorres. He is an exceptional leader who drove this project to deliver everything required of it – and then some more.
Crucially for this high-profile three-phase development of seven residential blocks between seven and 15 storeys high, Steve welded together a client and construction team with a single outcome-based purpose. He made sure each side understood the construction needs as well as the business drivers, and the resulting shared goals drove progress through the project.
He also combined superb leadership skills with fluent strategic planning and organisation, bringing the design team and key suppliers into the process. Steve consolidated the team by giving key subcontractors input in the selection of other subcontractors whose work would interface with their own.
Steve's clear direction and confidence not only engendered a collaborative ethos, but also resulted in all parties giving their all in a project that oozed achievement. Customer satisfaction surveys were well ahead of Taylor Woodrow's benchmark. Supplier performance ratings exceeded 90%, suppliers and consultants won a string of national supply chain awards. And Steve himself has walked off with the NHBC Pride In The Job supreme award for the last two years.
Steve's skill, determination and effective negotiation steered the consultants, suppliers and client team into realising the high-quality and durable design that was essential to selling the 468 apartments in the development. He also achieved budget certainty by obtaining a guaranteed fixed price for defined works.
Asked to bring forward the project's first two blocks by up to 14 weeks, Steve drove forward the necessary acceleration measures for this business-critical move to meet year-end accounts while bulldozing aside all potential roadblocks.
With this project, Steve has given an expert demonstration of how to build an integrated team that fully mobilises the skills of all its members. He delegated responsibility to team members, allowing them to make their own technical decisions. And by aligning everyone's interests in a successful project, he delivered an excellent development for the client and a satisfactory commercial result for all.
