Company: Bovis Lend Lease
Project: BBC Scotland Headquarters, Glasgow
Contract: Lump sum D&B

Roy Allport's creation of an enthusiastic culture of flexibility among the project team was pivotal in developing this demanding and technically difficult five-storey digital broadcast centre and headquarters.

His invaluable advice during the preconstruction phase helped drive the direction of the design within stringent cost limits without compromising the overall architectural vision. In particular, Roy conducted a full-scale value-engineering exercise prior to contract signature that offered the client 10% of the contract value; the BBC accepted 5%.

And when site work got under way, Roy 's flexible management style made the rigid change process a workable procedure. By giving the client the information to make timely decisions, he ensured he could deliver the programme. And he worked hard to accommodate the multi-headed end-user population (11 distinct communities, all of whom wanted input into the design and approval process) without deviating from the client's brief.

Roy 's excellence at quality control effectively closed out the project's biggest single risk – acoustic failure. The building's acoustic boxes had never been built before. While all the components had been tested individually, the boxes had never been tested as a unit.

Roy constructed a sample of each type of room so he could perform acoustic tests. He then exploited the opportunity provided by the sample to allow the client to choose all the finishes in the room and agree the setting out. It proved invaluable in managing client expectations and setting the required standard for all items of work.

Likewise, he built and tested control samples for the bespoke cladding, handrails, ceiling panels and glazed screens.

From the outset, Roy wanted to build powerful personal and professional relationships with the client, design team and subcontractors. The success of his strategy was that all parties proved willing to compromise at some stage to move the project along. The strength of the relationships has become even clearer now that Roy has successfully delivered the project, with client, consultants and subcontractors recommending Bovis in other projects it is bidding for.
