Jason Powell is fond of pointing out that the most effective innovation on this project was a very simple one: trust between all parties. It cost nothing but what savings it brought!

Jason worked hard at building relationships with the stakeholders. He invited the head teachers to site meetings and made sure he understood their complex requirements, and weekly site visits were held for staff and pupils.

By managing all risks on an open book basis, Jason built trust between all parties. It allowed early warnings to be given and issues managed in a timely and cost-effective way. As a result, he was able to divert a trunk sewer running under the building to incorporate a rainwater attenuation system as a late requirement. And he installed the client's IT system in first and second-fix operations rather than as a retrofit after the contract if money was available.

Jason listened to what the end-users had to say. Picking up on the staff's concern that there wouldn't be enough room to make easy use of specialist equipment, he pushed for the corridors to be designed extra-wide.

He also spent considerable time and effort bringing the project costs into line with the budget. He kept virtually all the spoil onsite and used it to level an existing football pitch and bury a geothermal system (which fuelled the underfloor heating) under it. Alterations to the M&E systems brought further savings, as did the use of gypsum-based acoustic ceiling tiles in place of fibrous tiles.

Jason tackled all the issues head on with a team attitude, engaging in robust discussions but in a positive manner. The result has been one of the first School Of The Future schemes to be delivered – on time, within budget, to the required quality and the delight of client and end-users.
