  Category: Projects £7-10m
Name: Jason Barnes
Company: HBG Construction
Project: Dolphin Centre, Darlington
Contract: NEC option C

Jason Barnes' achievement on this project is remarkable. He refurbished Darlington Council's key leisure attraction while it stayed open for business, delivering against a hairy timetable and a tough budget.

Having prepared well for the contract interview, Jason carried it for HBG by exuding professionalism and sense of purpose. His CV offered the added bonus of experience on another leisure facility involving both new-build and refurb.

Jason recognised how difficult the contract would be but had the strength of will and clear understanding of the requirements to bring it off. He drove the project costs within the client's budget by a series of value engineering exercises. To deal with a lack of design information and ongoing outstanding provisional sums, he instituted strict procedures to report the financial position accurately throughout the contract.

He held a partnering workshop to polish the team's collaboration skills, taking on board each team member's aspirations for the project.

Always up for the challenge, he passed his drive and enthusiasm on to the team. He formed excellent relationships, and his team clearly understood their roles, incorporating the inevitable client changes with professionalism and efficiency. Jason minimised the ensuing disruption by adapting the contract and short-term programmes, and changing the work areas around to suit the centre's trading requirements.

Jason's positive attitude to completion to contract rubbed off on all the stakeholders and subcontractors. Fortnightly progress meetings were held so the team could discuss outstanding design issues. Jason's involvement of the subcontractors in design development helped mesh them into the project and gave it a family feel, which in turn encouraged the trades to give it their all.

Passionate about succeeding – for himself, his client and his team – Jason brought this tricky project in with the loss of just one day's trading to the centre.
