After taking a two-year working holiday before going into practice as a land surveyor in South Africa , Hudson Fountain never went back. That holiday job in the UK construction industry proved a conversion experience and he's now a construction manager.

Hudson 's passion for construction is evident from this scheme, intended by the client to be its flagship call centre. Committed to delivering a blisteringly fast programme – from a standing start, with no drawings or specifications, Hudson had just 12 weeks to hand over the first phase so the client could start trading – he showed an immense dedication to the project.

He quite literally worked all hours. Evenings and weekends were a norm, and even on a family holiday in South Africa , he carried on contributing through email.

Hudson established extremely close working relationships with the design team and client to build the necessary synergy and impetus to deliver the project in such a short time. He kept a close rein on the risk register, regularly reviewing it with the entire project team. When actual progress diverted from planned, he immediately reallocated resources, put in more labour, and resequenced subsequent activities to regain ground. When the service engineers faltered under the ferocious time pressures, he stepped in to take on the M&E as a D&B element.

Hudson took a systematic approach to fit-out, dividing the floors into smaller, more manageable sections to give continuity of work with the earliest possible start and finish. Snagging and quality control began from the outset; a right-first-time culture was imperative as there was no float to go back and correct areas.

His determination to complete this intense project on time, within budget and to a high-quality finish met with total success. Hudson met every project milestone; indeed, he completed a fortnight ahead of the programme. For the client, it is not only a flagship and landmark building, but the model it is putting forward for future roll-outs – and which it wants Mace's Como business to run.
