Project: 14 Pier Walk & 6 Mitre Passage, Greenwich
Contract: JCT 1998

With the infrastructure works being carried out by another contractor and programmed to proceed at the same time as the main build, Nick Daniel had his work cut out. He succeeded by focusing on out-the-box thinking and daily planning to ensure full co-ordination of both sectors regardless of where the contractual responsibility sat.

Given the fast-track nature of the project, Nick recognised he needed the backing of a strong team in all areas. The intense pace required colleagues who could communicate at all levels and in all directions, and Nick constantly adjusted team dynamics to tackle the priorities at any given time.

He built and maintained relationships with the client, the consultants and all the subcontractors. He fostered a management culture of face-to-face meetings with clear agendas to ensure all stakeholders were fully involved in the project.

He held design workshops daily throughout the early stages and ensured the attendance of the key members of his own team as well as the client team and specialists. Nick then fed the workshop decisions back to the wider team through robust reporting procedures.

Sceptical of a quality control that relies solely on conforming to the client’s and the contractor’s own procedural requirements, Nick put quality at the heart of everything right from the start. He encouraged quality discussions at every type of project meeting. He constantly reviewed test and inspection procedures. He put quality as the first agenda item for every design review meeting. And he appointed quality inspectors to review standards onsite every day.
