Employer: BAM Construction
Project: Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
Contract: JCT 1998

Anthony Nagel impressed so consistently that the client kept adding works to the contract for the biggest museum rebuild of modern times.

Right at the start, before construction even commenced, Anthony’s engagement with the many prestigious neighbours was so effective that the client asked him to manage the asbestos removal and demolition works too.

His understanding of the project’s impact was crucial: five other buildings bordered the museum and they all hosted examination rooms. And it wasn’t just site operations that were constrained: the single 3.8m-wide access road crossed one of the busiest pavements in Oxford. Anthony’s exceptional logistics management impressed the client, the neighbours and the public.

He showcased the project for third parties. He was constantly engaged in presentations to adjoining residents, potential funders, local businesses and users. And he hosted regular site tours for school parties and the general public. His commitment, which was not part of the job description, delighted the client.

Allied to a superb grasp of construction, Anthony turned in such an assured performance that what was initially a base build contract turned into something much bigger. He was also handed the complex fit-out, a £5m variation to install 416 showcases with set works that added eight months to the programme.

Anthony embarked on his own fast-track learning experience with the users to gain a full understanding of what was required. And when the variation resulted in a large amount of redesign that pushed back the completion date, he deftly reprogrammed the works. His finely tuned sectional handovers won the buy-in of the users and also achieved the official opening date.
