Name: Carl Aaron
Employer: ISG Regions
Project: Ridge Medical Centre, Great Horton, Bradford
Contract: JCT 2005
In Carl Aaron’s first post as site manager, he took on a building that many might have struggled to deliver, and tackled difficult issues with a mind to resolving them. In essence, he displayed the knowledge and experience of a seasoned professional rather than a rookie.
The challenges included a lead-in time of just a fortnight on a complex structure with a basement in close proximity to a derelict listed building (that also had to be renovated) and terraced housing. Carl was well organised, started quickly and was always looking for opportunities to get ahead.
When difficulties arose, he never ducked the issue but used his initiative to find solutions. At site meetings he was consistently well prepared and got straight to the point. He was willing to admit when things weren’t going to plan (and typically already had solutions in place), and mature enough to accept alternative solutions as more appropriate than his own.
He built a good relationship with the client, managing expectations with success. He established good communications with all the consultants, seeking input and negotiating win-win outcomes. And he also understood the importance of the subcontractors. He treated them with respect and gave credit where due, yet had the confidence to dismiss from site those who disregarded health and safety rules despite warnings.
His quality of work and attention to detail remained high even under the heightened pressures as the project neared completion. He created the team mentality that helped bring success and a satisfied client.
