Contract: JCT 1998
Damien Froehlich displayed an exemplary control of health and safety on this site on an important arterial and passenger highway where access presented huge difficulties.
The complexity of the site required constant alterations to site access, particularly after an external works contractor took control of the footpaths. Construction on adjoining sites required constant co-ordination of all site activities, with Damien having to integrate his two tower cranes with up to six adjacent towers. He successfully managed site safety through a mix of initiatives backed up by a zero-harm and behavioural safety philosophy that resulted in no reportable accidents.
Damien also demonstrated first-class management skills at all levels of engagement. He brought in a dedicated onsite design manager to co-ordinate the information flow, and effectively integrated the design and construction teams. He built a collaborative project team, with client, designers, supply chain and subcontractors all contributing extra to give the best possible scheme outcomes.
He combined a high level of technical expertise with an ability to engage the site team in resolving construction issues. He independently reviewed all the works packages, taking forward alternatives and methods that would benefit the client.
His close consideration of the facade renovation package was particularly effective, resulting in the use of in-house temporary works resources to resolve the complex retained facade issues. Other value-engineering achievements included the innovative use of plant items such as Merlo forklifts, the installation of Kerkstoel precast twin-wall panels and the specification of Bamtec roll-out mesh.
Damien’s significant expertise in planning and programming greatly helped in the detailed planning of the works. He made good use of the supply chain resources available to provide lean programming solutions that ensured timely project completion.
