Name: Mark Tomalin
Employer: Denne Construction
Project: Margaret House, Uckfield, East Sussex
Having previously completed a similar size care home to the same client’s great satisfaction, Mark Tomalin was a shoo-in for this project. He put to good use the lessons he’d learned on the first scheme as well as countless other care home projects, contributing significant value-engineering ideas.
His early planning of the interface between the timber-frame bays and the superstructure brickwork allowed rapid commencement with the roof installation and weathering and a much earlier start to internal works. And he repurposed demolition materials for the piling mat and the foundations.
But what really marked him out, on this project as with all his others, was his ability to create a unified and focused site team where everyone knew exactly what was expected of them. So smooth and efficient was his communication with his team and his management of it that he overcame a programme deficit caused by disastrously bad weather (for which he had been awarded a five-week extension of time). Sterling resequencing and a dedication to picking up the momentum, allied to an unusual openness to discussion and problem solving with the site team, delivered all that was asked of Mark, and more.
