Category 1: Projects over £60m

Name: Nicholas Russell
Employer: Mace Ltd
Project: Morgan Stanley Project Gemini
Contract: Construction Management

No architectural awards will be coming the way of Nicholas Russell’s project, but the big tin shed houses a formidably high-tech engineered environment that was only brought off thanks to the very best in modern construction management techniques.

Nick’s technical awareness, flexibility of approach and non-confrontational management style drove this complex and extremely fast-track project to completion on time, within budget and snag-free. Time and again, he demonstrated the ability to choose the right staff for the task, passing on his own enthusiasm and commitment.

To deliver this vast facility on time, Nick knew he had to innovate and ensure all site workers operated as a single team.

He saved considerable time and resources by installing carpet-style steel reinforcement for the transfer slab that supported the mezzanine floor. The entire project was modelled in 3D to allow for the integration of offsite fabrication of plant and other construction elements.

Nick ran an effective and efficient team, communicating issues clearly to the client and all the subcontractors. Crucially, he personally controlled the subcontractor interface and co-ordinated the packages. He provided a large open-plan office and canteen for subcontractor staff to promote harmony between trades, and backed it up with top-notch showering and changing facilities.

He used 3D computer modelling to detail actual and expected progress, which helped the team address possible problems before they arose. And when faced with manufacturing delays for essential switchgear and generators that would profoundly affect the programme, he developed alternative strategies for the trades while maintaining delivery for testing and commissioning.

Aware that the critical nature of the highly technical services made quality key – once the data centre went live it could not simply be switched off again – Nick appointed only high-quality subcontractors and suppliers. And after the systems had been commissioned, he thoroughly proved them during a four-week period of rigorous testing. All scenarios were covered, including the simulation of the heat generated at maximum server load by temporarily installing over 2,000 3kW heaters.

Nick achieved all project objectives within the original time scale while incorporating a 40% increase in project value. His client focus, proactive approach, problem-solving mindset and strength of leadership translated into the highest level of customer satisfaction.
